When everything’s going well… except our mental health
Sometimes everything in our life is going well… except our mental health. It can stir up all sorts of emotions and thoughts. We might not understand it. Perhaps we feel guilty, hopeless, frustrated, and deeply ashamed. But there’s nothing to be ashamed of. Poor mental health, and mental illness, can happen to anyone at any time.
Depression: surviving Summer
When summer arrives, it feels like everyone around us is popping on shorts, lighting up the BBQ, and inviting the neighbours round for Pimm’s. People seem lighter and brighter when the sun comes out.
But for many of us that’s not the case. The sun doesn’t send our mental illness a memo asking it to kindly leave us alone. Depression has a nasty habit of lingering around whatever the weather.
In this post, we outline some problems that can arise at this time of year – and suggest some ways we can manage them.
A letter to those expecting exam results
Dear Exam-Result-Expecter,
We know how difficult results day can be. We know how many sleepless nights it can cause. We want you to know that you are not alone in feeling this way – most people your age will be feeling similar things, and many of us who got our results a long time ago still feel anxious and get the occasional results day dream at this time of year!
A self-care guide for parents
Most of us will have heard of the term ‘self-care‘ by now, but for many of us – especially parents – the notion of self-care can seem like a lovely idea in principle, yet a tad unrealistic and inaccessible. Slotting it into the chaos and unpredictability of our lives can feel impossible, especially when children are thrown into the mix.
What we need are practical, down-to-earth ideas for incorporating self-care into our busy, sticky-fingered, never-ending-pile-of-washing, can’t-even-go-to-the-toilet-in-peace lives.
Depression: please don’t self-blame
Depression corrodes our confidence and quite often, it brings with it a sense of shame and incessant self-blame. Even though we rationally know that depression is an illness, we might find that we get caught in a loop of beating ourselves up and blaming ourselves for how ill we are.
Depression: planning for university
Going to university can be really exciting. It can provide some amazing opportunities and lifelong friendships. Leaving home and moving to uni can also be really hard; the majority of students will feel anxious about leaving home and finding their way around a new city. We know that it can feel like even more of a challenge when you’re battling an illness such as depression, so, we’ve pulled together a list of things which will hopefully help to smooth this transition a little bit and make things feel slightly easier.
