When we are living with depression, it can be hard to find the words to describe how we feel. But we can often find comfort in other people’s words. Sometimes quotes can say something that we’re struggling to find the words for. Sometimes they can be really comforting and feel almost like a hug.

1. FOR WHEN WE JUST WANT TO FEEL OKAY

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: We all want everything to be okay. We don’t even wish so much for marvellous or outstanding. We will happily settle for okay, because most of the time, okay is enough.” — David Levithan

2. FOR WHEN THE WORLD FEELS DARK AND GREY

“I know you think the world is too dark to even dream in color, but I’ve seen flowers bloom at midnight. I’ve seen kites fly in gray skies, and they were real close to looking like the sunrise, and sometimes it takes the most wounded of wings, the most broken of things, to notice how strong the breeze is, how precious the flight.” — Andrea Gibson

3. FOR WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN IN THE WORLD

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” — Fred Rogers

4. FOR THOSE DAYS WHEN WE FEEL LIKE WE’RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH

“I am trying to find myself in all of the chaos, find something that I can call me inside the screams and inside the ‘you shoulds’ and ‘you have to bes’.” — Samantha Schutz

5. FOR WHEN WE DON’T FEEL VERY BRAVE

“You are on the floor crying, and you have been on the floor crying for days. And that is you being brave. That is you getting through it as best you know how. No one else can decide what your tough looks like.” — Clementine von Radics

6. FOR WHEN WE FEEL SCARED

“Scared is what you’re feeling. Brave is what you’re doing.” — Emily Donoghue

7. FOR WHEN WE FEEL WORTHLESS

“You lost your way. Not your worth.”  — Chris McGeown

8. FOR WHEN WE FEEL BROKEN

“And you begin again. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win. But you begin again. Even through your heart is breaking, in time, the sun will shine, and you’ll begin again.” — Barry Manilow

9. FOR WHEN WE CAN’T STOP CRYING

“It’s alright to cry, even the sky does sometimes.” — Unknown

10. FOR WHEN WE FEEL LIKE WE CAN’T BREATHE

“Everyone who terrified you is sixty-five percent water. And everyone you love is made of stardust, and I know sometimes, you cannot even breathe deeply, and the night sky is no home, and you have cried yourself to sleep enough times that you are down to your last two percent; but nothing is infinite, not even loss. You are made of the sea and the stars, and one day you are going to find yourself again.”  — Finn Butler

11. FOR WHEN WE FEEL LIKE WE’RE GETTING NOWHERE

“You are succeeding just by putting one foot in front of the others, carrying on along this scary, rocky, lonely, road.” — Call The Midwife

12. FOR WHEN WE FEEL LIKE HOWEVER HARD WE TRY, WE END UP BACK WHERE WE STARTED

“You work so hard just to end up at home crying yourself to sleep; remember you’re trying, you are moving mountains that have plagued you since you were young, and you’re trying so hard. Keep fighting, fight until you have won. Fight until you have found your way home, until the sun comes back and you heart learns to love mornings again.”  — T.B. LaBerge

13. FOR WHEN WE FEEL LIKE WE NEED OTHER PEOPLE

“We are all people in need. We are not perfect. We are not machines. We make mistakes. We need grace. We need compassion. We need help at times. We need other people. And that’s okay.” — Jamie Tworkowski

14. FOR WHEN WE FEEL UNFIXABLE

“It’s easy to give in and give up on yourself when you believe that you’re unfixable, when you believe that you are the problem. But please know that you will never be the problem. You never were.” — Elizabeth Wilder

15. FOR WHEN WE FEEL LIKE WE WILL NEVER GET BETTER

“I lie there and wait, and remind myself over and over that it doesn’t last forever. That there will be another day and after that, yet another day. One of those days, I’ll get up and eat breakfast and feel okay.” — E. Lockhart

16. FOR WHEN WE FEEL LIKE WE HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO GIVE

“I knew that I was dying. Something in me said go ahead, sleep, become them, accept. Then something else in me said no, save the tiniest bit. It needn’t be much, just a spark. A spark can set a whole forest on fire.” — Charles Bukowski

17. FOR WHEN WE NEED A REMINDER OF HOW RESILIENT WE ARE

“You cry and you scream and you stomp your feet and you shout. You say, ‘You know what? I’m giving up, I don’t care.’ And then you go to bed and you wake up and it’s a brand new day, and you pick yourself back up again.” — Nicole Scherzinger

18. FOR WHEN DEPRESSION FEELS OVERWHELMING

“Depression is also smaller than you. Always, it is smaller than you, even when it feels vast. It operates within you, you do not operate within it. It may be a dark cloud passing across the sky but – if that is the metaphor – you are the sky. You were there before it. And the cloud can’t exist without the sky, but the sky can exist without the cloud.” — Matt Haig
